Family receives support from the Governor of Pennsylvania
(Harrisburg, PA-February
27, 2003) The family of abolitionist, William Still, who was
dubbed the Father of the Underground Railroad for his role
in working with the Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia and
for writing the book, The Underground Railroad, will be honored
today in a private ceremony with Governor Rendell. The historic
Still Family descendants will gather at the States Capitol
today to be recognized with a proclamation from the Governor
for both their contribution in history and for their efforts
through the William Still Underground Railroad Foundation,
in creating a first-time reunion for all of the families who
participated in the Underground Railroad. The reunion entitled
The National Underground Railroad Family Reunion Festival
will take place June 27-29 in Philadelphia. Invited are descendants
of enslaved persons, abolitionists, stationmasters, conductors,
and the general public. Included among the invitees will be
Quaker, Jewish as well as Native American families who participated
on the Underground Railroad. The Still Family has been recognized
as one of the most prominent families on the East Coast, and
continues to operate in the spirit of freedom, by not only
celebrating it, but also reunifying the families who were
