(Harrisburg, PA-February 27, 2003) The family of abolitionist, William Still, who was dubbed the Father of the Underground Railroad for his role in working with the Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia and for writing the book, The Underground Railroad, will be honored today in a private ceremony with Governor Rendell. The historic Still Family descendants will gather at the States Capitol today to be recognized with a proclamation from the Governor for both their contribution in history and for their efforts through the William Still Underground Railroad Foundation, in creating a first-time reunion for all of the families who participated in the Underground Railroad. The reunion entitled The National Underground Railroad Family Reunion Festival will take place June 27-29 in Philadelphia. Invited are descendants of enslaved persons, abolitionists, stationmasters, conductors, and the general public.
